Nengmyun and Gomtang at Seoul Gomtang – Santa Clara, Ca

Authentic Korean soup time! 
This recommendation is courtesy of a fellow food expert and good friend of YouAteMySteak. She took me out to rediscover some great Korean food in the Bay Area. The portions at this place are the biggest I’ve ever seen, so be sure to bring your appetite! The service is really good too. Our waitress pointed out to my friend that she was with “a very handsome young man!” lol

Mul Nengmyun

Nengmyun is made mainly from buckwheat noodles. The broth is usually made from a beef broth. Depending on the recipe, it will have slices of radish, cucumber, a boiled egg, and other ingredients for seasoning. Seoul Gomtang seems to add in slices of asian pear as well (which after having it served this way, I now feel is mandatory for a good nenmgyun) There’s different kinds of nengmyun (or Naengmyeon), but for this post, we’ll cover Mul Nengmyun because that’s what we had this time (and it’s my favorite kind).

Mul Naengmyeon is perfect for a hot day because it comes with lots of ice in the broth making the soup extra icy cold (along with the metal bowl it’s served in). Be sure to find the hot mustard and vinegar on the table and use it in your naengmyeon. It enhances the flavor dramatically (the hot mustard acts and tastes like a mix of wasabi and horse radish. delicious!). If sesame seeds are available, be sure to throw those in as well!
Gomtang at Seoul Gomtang in Santa Clara, Ca
Gomtang is a a soup made with various beef parts such as ribs, oxtail, brisket, ox’s head or ox bones by slow simmering on a low flame. The broth tends to have a milky color with a rich and hearty taste. It’s best to taste first then add salt for more flavor. This goes for green onions too.  It’s particularly good with rice as well.
